I still remember vividly how i escaped from burns and injuries in a fire. On that afternoon, i was on the third floor of the Prime Complex when i heard someone shouting histerically. I ran in the direction of the shouting. A man in white was calling out, "Fire,! Fire, !" He was also in the process of breaking the glass panel of the alarm device to sound it. The nxt minute, i saw people thronging along the corridor, streaming out from the open doors of their offices. It was at the moment, the Manager of the complex came to the third floor and told the crowd not to panic. His calm manner andvoice manage to control the frightened crowd. They then began to evacuate in an orderly manner. ten minutes later, the polices arrived with the fire fighters in tow. They launched into action almost immediately, ensuring the olderly evacuation of people. At the same time, they sprayed their powerful hoses of water on the blazing fire. I followed the crowd and we ran all the way down three flights of steps. On the way down, i saw many stretchers ferrying unconsious people away from the building as the fire raged on. When i was on the ground floor, i released a sigh of relief, i was thinking as i left the building "what a narrow escape" I must have said it aloud for a girl next to me turned to me and said, "Oh yes, we could have been burnt inside and turned to charcoal. Fortunately, the Manager guided us to leave in an orderly manner. " Eventually, the tireless efforts of the firemen managed to keep the fire under control. and outcomes was the building looked a wreck, with two floors destroyed by the fire. Damages were estimated to be more than RM10 million.
up her little son alone...” The widow had to work hard to bring up her little son alone. This was after her husband’s early death. She and her son lived in a wooden house. It was a small house with only one bedroom and a kitchen.
Mariam wanted Sam to study hard to get good result. So she would not let Sam help her do any household chores or wash his own clothes. The years flew by. Sam sat for his SPM examination and pass with flying colours.
His mother was very happy. She went round telling her friends, “My Sam will be leaving for the city to study in a college. He will become a Manager one day. I’ll move to live with him in the city. Then, my struggle is worth it.”
So Mariam continued to work hard to send money to Sam who was studying a business degree. For Mariam, it was a tough life. Meanwhile, Sam kept on phoning home to ask for more money. Mariam even had to borrow from her neighbours and friends to send her son the money.
Three years Sam stopped calling home. He did not even let his mother where he was. When she phoned the faculty, they told her that he had graduated and left for job. However, they could not her more. Mariam was baffled. Where was Sam? She was so sure he would come back and fetch her for city. So, she started to pack some of her bags and boxes.
Three months later, there was still no news or call from Sam. One day, Mariam’s niece, Kate, came to talk to her about Sam. She told her aunt, “Auntie, a friend of mine met Sam in a bank. He’s the branch manager. This is his address.”
Early in the morning, Mariam took the first bus to the city. At the bus station, she took a taxi and showed the taxi driver the bank address. On the way there, she told the driver about Sam and what a filial son he was.
The driver stopped his taxi in front of a tall building. She got out of the taxi and smiled at him happily. This was the moment she was going to meet Sam. She imagined him showing surprise and delight at meeting his mother. Inside the building, a security guard asked her who she was looking for. She told the guard Sam’s name.
The bank staff saw an old lady holding a worn-out handbag. They were wondering, “Who is this woman? Why is she asking for our manager?”
Meanwhile, Sam pretended he did not know his mother. Feeling disgusted and ashamed, he asked the security guard to ask her to leave. Mariam was shocked to hear that! She looked Sam in a disappointed feeling ever, and ran out of the bank.
Back in her house, Mariam cried the whole night. She cried and cried till she had no more tears. The next morning, she was sitting by the window with Sam’s photo on her lap. She saw him walking towards their house. Soon she was shouting and crying, “My Sam is back! My Sam is back!”
Sam ran towards her and hugged Mariam as he never let go. He was so sorry and regretted the way he behaved. His colleagues were the one who made him realized his big mistakes neglected his mother.
The neighbours heard her. They too shouted and cheered, feeling happy for her.

DESCRIBING EXPERIENCES AND INCIDENTS - My Childhood Memories
I spent most of my childhood in Kampung Pinang, a quiet village in the outskirts of Kuala Krai, Kelantan. It was totally different world out there. It was peaceful and quiet. Our days were carefree and our lives moves at a leisurely pace. There was no blaring of horns or the daily of traffic.
Perhaps that is the reason why even today many city dwellers long to escape to the countryside during weekends and holidays. They long for some respite from the hustle and bustle of the city.
A typical day for us started very early in the morning. In those days, we did not wake up to the musical of chimes of fancy alarm clocks.Instead we woke up to the melodious chirpingsof birds and the sounds of the cocks' rows. After our morning ablutions and a hearty breakfast which mother cooked over a charcoal stove, we were ready for school, dressed in our stiff, starched uniforms.
Stepping out the darkness, we trudged along the narrow path lined with rall shady trees on both sides. After an hour or so, rays of sunlight cold be seen streaming through the thick foliage of leaves. As we sauntered along, we enjoyed listening to the rusting of leaves that sounded like the swishing of shirts.
Walking home from school on the sweltering heat was tiring but fun. Shrieks and squeals could be heard as we exchanged stories and jokes. By the times we reached home, we were drenched in perspiration. After a quick shower, we sat down on the wooden floor, ready to satisfy our hunger. Lunch was usually a simple meals of hot steaming rice, salted fish and a generous helping of spicy curry.
After lunch, we would sneak out to the stream nearby. The happiest times of my childhood days were those precious moments spent sitting by the gurgling stream chomping away the crunchy creakers. We waded in waste high water until mother's shrill voice shatter the silence of the afternoon. We would the race back into the house and grab a book each, pretending to do our school work. We knew pretty well that only sight of her children reading would placate mum's anger.
Years have now passed. My siblings have all settled down in different parts of the country. The village where I grew up has now become a residential area. As I reminisce about my childhood days, I still feel sadness and nostalgia.
